Is It Possible

that God, at some point in our natural evolution, intervened to give us the gifts of self-awareness and intelligence? Or is this the forbidden fruit of so-called Intelligent Design?

This would, technically, be intelligent design. However, I tend to try and avoid the term "intelligent design" when discussing deism, since the phrase has become so associated with creationist nutjobs like Ben Stein masquerading as deists.

Ditto.
"Intelligent Design" is a code word for "Biblical Creationism", even though the proponents of ID deny it.

Actually, that's not exactly correct. "Intelligent Design" leaves room for evolution, whereas "Biblical Creationism" does not. In fact, creationists have written articles denouncing ID. So, at least at the upper levels, they are two separate movements.
Of course, I suspect that many of the adherents of Intelligent Design have come from the Biblical Creation movement, simply seeing a different approach to try to get religion into schools. They would not likely include many of the more staunch Biblical Creationism proponents, though, because there's nothing that irritates staunch Biblical Creationists more than "compromise" on what the Bible says about creation, and Intelligent Design is seen as compromise.
I'd heard a rumor on the internet that the ID movement actually started as an attempt to see the miracle in evolution. Creationists seized upon it as a new vehicle to restart the whole debate on Creationism. I haven't been able to confirm it but it sounds plausible.
To be fair to "Biblical Creationism" in the form it existed before Darwin it did allow for what we would call evolution; only in its modern form does "Biblical Creationism" try to exclude evolution (by narrowing the defintion to Darwin's version). Please note that evolution is basicly 1) A form of change happens, 2) The change is inherable, 3) The change is passed on to succeding generation. Note that the criteria say NOTHING about the method of the change or how the change comes about nor do they say anything about the direction of that change. As long as it meets these three criteria it is Evolution.
The Bible itself talks about what is known as Regressive Evolution or fall from perfection (Genesis 3:14-19, Genesis 6:3, and Genesis 9:1-5 for example) It is not Darwinian evolution but it is a type of EVOLUTION. What modern Biblical Creationist fail to understand is that Darwin actually did was come up with a mechanism on how evolution happened. It would more accuate to call it Darwin's Theory regarding a Method of Evolution.
Take out the biblical creationism and there is intelligent design as to the way and order in the universe and the Creater who created it.

Yes, and Creationism is another word for UNIVERSAL MAGIC ACT. These people are so obtuse, so simple-minded that they must side with the simpler side, because naturally they don't care about not knowing, they are just fine with not knowing, and most importantly, they are overjoy about not knowing.
Any evidence for Evolution is brushed off to the side whereas they'll proceed with complete lies and typical vast oversimplifications.
I have dealt with so many arguments that I've come to expect the most idiotic arguments you could ever imagine. Generally they'll throw certain "hoaxes" within the fossil record trying to label evolutionary scientists as liars, when in fact the scientists themselves no longer regard the "hoaxes" as evidence and usually basically never have.
They complete ignore the several hundred thousand other fossils are absolutely NOT hoaxes. But hey, what would you expect from believers of a universal magic act. God would most certainly be having a good laugh at them.
